THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

Yesterday was the last of our 2023 Fairs, this time at the magnificently named Grimsthorpe Castle – and it was as jolly cold as it somehow sounds.  From now on it’s all downhill to Christmas, and if the lack of seasonal snow means we can’t be actually sledging, we can pretend: after all, like the real thing it’s exhilarating and exhausting and we’ll be sliding faster and faster as we turn into the home straight.   Meanwhile Isobel, as the Artistic One, is in charge of garlanding the stairs, hall, drawing and dining rooms, and rendering the whole as fire-proof as possible – which isn’t very.  The big tree is 12’ tall this year and enormously round, and the lesser one is 9’ and tucked in a corner where it can be seen both from the kitchen and outside – let no-one ever accuse us of doing things by half.
